BACKSTORY

This was a course project. Students were randomly put into groups of three and given a UX/UI Challenge: create a Spanish-English Language Learning App for young people (12-18 year olds) who cannot attend Language Summer Camps due to time and/or high costs.

PROJECT BRIEF

  • To launch an online version of the summer camp.

  • Transform the in-person classroom experience into a 100% digital experience at a lower cost.

  • Be interactive

  • Students can seek help

  • Test knowledge and skills

  • Track progress

RESEARCH

What we wanted to know:

  • Preferred apps of our user group and why.

  • Level of interest for app competition, rewards, and ability to converse with others.

  • Awareness and experience of other language apps.

  • Language learning experiences and preferences.

How we did it:

*Note that due to the fast nature of the course, all research was done with other class members who assumed the role of teenagers. In reality, the research would have been done with teenagers and language teachers.​

FINDINGS

  • Gaming motivations: rewards and competition

  • Every participant had tried a language app, mainly Duolingo

  • Pain points of Duolingo: no depth, boring

  • Pros of language apps: Convenient, good repetition, quick, fun, sense of achievement

  • Summer camps "rock" due to social and community aspect

Problem statement

Young students need to have an engaging, personal and community-based online language platform because they can’t attend the in-person summer camp.

Product and concept definition

‘Summer Camp in Your Pocket’ offers access for all students to attend Summer Camp regardless of time, money, and location. We go beyond the digital experience to create a great community of language learners. New language is discovered in a fun and engaging way.
